Each surface requires a different method of surface preparation, and each surface requires a different primer or paint. For example, there are many different primers for wood (cedar, oak, woods with varnish, woods that need stain blocking agents, raw wood etc.) You need to know what kind of wood you are dealing with before it can be properly primed and/or painted.
